What can you expect?

In the initial session (intake session), the mental health practitioner will with you and your family to discuss what you can expect from treatment; likely benefits and risks of treatment; confidentiality; rights & responsibilities; telephone and emergency procedures; payment for services; cancellations and missed appointments; frequency, duration, and number of sessions in group; group format (open or closed); and any other questions either of you may have.

During this first session, the mental health practitioner will also work with the family members to understand your presenting concerns and goals for therapy.  To assist with this, the mental health practitioner may use a variety of assessment tools to better understand your family’s therapy needs.

After the first session, your family and your mental health practitioner will discuss a counselling plan that works for everyone. There is no one-size-fits-all solution because every family is unique. This means that the frequency, duration, and number of sessions will differ for everyone.
