In the initial session (intake session), the mental health practitioner will discuss what you can expect from treatment; likely benefits and risks of treatment; confidentiality; rights & responsibilities; telephone and emergency procedures; payment for services; cancellations and missed appointments; and any other questions you may have.

During this first session, the mental health practitioner will also work with you to understand your presenting concerns and goals for therapy. To assist with this, the mental health practitioner may use a variety of assessment tools to better understand you and your therapy needs.

After the first session, you and your mental health practitioner will discuss a counselling plan that works for you. There is no one-size-fits-all solution because every individual is unique. This means that the frequency, duration, and number of sessions will differ for everyone.
