Walk-And-Talk Therapy

Sitting in a counselling room during therapy isn’t for everyone  - we understand that. Walk-and-talk therapy is exactly what it sounds like.

During walk-and-talk counselling sessions, you and your mental health practitioner will walk side-by-side while having dialogue similar to a traditional session in the room. During this “walk-and-talk,” you control the pace, distance, breathing breaks/sitting, and walking.

In order to ensure confidentiality, these sessions will be in an environment that can be quiet & safe. Your mental health practitioner will discuss confidentiality during your intake session and what can be done to ensure a safe, comforting, and confidential environment for you.

 Why walk-and-talk?
There’s many reasons you may prefer walk-and-talk therapy over traditional therapy (or maybe a combination of both). Some of these reasons include:

  • Research has shown that walking and exercise can bump up the production of our brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, endorphins, which can reduce stress. For instance, walking is associated with an increase in serotonin, which helps with stabilizing our mood, feelings of well-being and happiness. Walking also bumps up our dopamine production, which is closely connected to our reward and pleasure centres.

  • There’s lots of research that suggests physical activity is positively correlated with positive mental health outcomes – this allows you do improve you to improve your physical and mental health at once!

  • You may enjoy being on your feet and being active instead of sitting in a counselling room.

  • You may enjoy the sensory cues from the environment and being out in the environment

Disclaimer: Walk-and-talk sessions are weather dependent and will be done only during daylight.
